Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Special Education and Rehabilitation

For students attending classes at Cochise College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865). Elementary education majors must choose a subject matter concentration in consultation with an academic advisor in the College of Education. The pre-education advisor at The University of Arizona Sierra Vista Campus can be contacted at 1140 N. Colombo, Sierra Vista, (458-8278).

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is limited. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).
  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 units of college course work.

GENERAL EDUCATION SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES

ENGLISH--6 units

MATHEMATICS--3 units

College algebra is the minimum mathematics requirement. One of the following higher level mathematics courses may be substituted:

SECOND LANGUAGE--16 units
This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to
Credit by Examination in The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Cochise College includes the following:

GENERAL EDUCATION STUDY AREAS

TRADITIONS AND CULTURES--9 units from List 1 and List 2

LIST 1 (Non-Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete one course from the following options:

LIST 2 (Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete a two-course sequence from the following options:

BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES--8 units including laboratory work.
The special education and rehabilitation program in the College of Education requires BIO 201 and BIO 202.

INDIVIDUALS, SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS--9 units from at least two areas. One of the courses (identified with an * [asterisk] preceding the course number) must focus on gender, class, race or ethnicity.

+ PSY 101 is required for the major.

ARTS--3 units

LITERATURE--3 units

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or
  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 220 or POS 110 and POS 221) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. POS 220 or POS 110 will satisfy, for the College of Education only, three units toward the category individuals, societies and institutions.
