Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education
Voice or Instrumental

For students attending classes at Eastern Arizona College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Entrance examinations in musicianship and the major performance area are required. All transfer music majors (except piano and organ performance majors) must audition for placement in class or group piano instruction. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the assistant director of the School of Music (621-1454) for additional information.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the music courses listed below, students should complete eight units of individual instruction in their major instrument or voice and four units of a conducted ensemble. Instrumental music education majors should also complete one unit of course work in a coached ensemble.

MUSIC--29 units

• MUS 105 and 107, 106 and 108, 117 and 118, 119 and 120, 121, 123 or 124**, 138*, 155 and 156, 204, 205 and 206, 208, 255 and 256

* This course is required only for majors in instrumental music education.

** One unit may be applied to the MUS 352 requirement at the UA.

College algebra is the minimum mathematics requirement. One of the following higher level mathematics courses may be substituted:

A course may not be used to fulfill requirements in more than one study area.

Select three units of course work from the following options:

• Anthropology -- ANT - any course
• History -- HIS 210, 250, 270
• Justice Administration -- AJS 101, 106, 126, 130, 201, 202, 220, 280
• Political Science -- POS 100, 130
• Psychology -- PSY - any course except 101
• Sociology -- SOC - any course

NON-WESTERN AND MINORITY STUDIES--3 units

• PHI 201

ARTS--3-6 units

• Students should complete this requirement after transfer to The University of Arizona by taking Music 330a and 330b.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Consult a music education advisor at The University of Arizona for assistance in selecting the required course work. Students pursuing a major in music education must meet the following special requirements before being admitted to the Teacher Education Program.

1. Completion of 56 units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree.
2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 units of college course work.
3. Minimum grade-point average of 2.80 in all music courses other than ensembles.
4. Completion of the Music Education Advisory Review process.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
   or
2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 220 or POS 110 and POS 221) on the United States and Arizona constitutions.
