Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Secondary Education

For students attending classes at the Maricopa County Community Colleges and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865).

Students interested in teaching at the secondary school level will select a subject area teaching major. The B.S. degree is granted to mathematics and science majors. The B.A. degree is granted to other approved teaching majors.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is limited. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).
2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on most current 56 units of college course work.
3. Basic skills testing (formerly the PPST) has been suspended since spring 1994; however, for future admissions, the faculty in the College of Education are looking at various forms of basic skills assessment.
4. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student and Career Services for further information. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

SECOND LANGUAGE--16 units
The requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Credit by Examination in The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at the Maricopa County Community Colleges includes the following. For Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese or Sign Language sequences, a placement test may be required to appropriately place students or to satisfy fourth semester proficiency.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
   or
2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 220 or POS 221 and POS 222 or POS 110 and POS 221) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. POS 220 or POS 221 and POS 222 or POS 110 will satisfy, for the College of Education only, three units toward the category individuals, societies and institutions.
