Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education
Voice or Instrumental

For students attending classes at the Maricopa County Community Colleges and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Entrance examinations in musicianship and the major performance area are required. All transfer music majors (except piano and organ performance majors) must audition for placement in class or group piano instruction. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the assistant director of the School of Music (621-1454) for additional information.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the music courses listed below, students should complete eight units of individual instruction in their major instrument or voice and four units in a conducted ensemble. Instrumental music education majors should also complete one unit of course work in a coached ensemble.

MUSIC--52 units

* These courses are required for majors in instrumental music education.

GENERAL EDUCATION SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES

ENGLISH--6 units

MATHEMATICS--3 units

College algebra is the minimum mathematics requirement. One of the following higher level mathematics courses may be substituted:

ORAL COMMUNICATION--3 units

GENERAL EDUCATION STUDY AREAS
A course may not be used to fulfill requirements in more than one study area.

WESTERN CIVILIZATION--6-9 units from one of the options:

SCIENCE--3 units (with or without laboratory)

INDIVIDUALS, SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS--9 units

Select three units of course work from the following options:

* Students may take POS 220 or POS 221 and 222 to complete the constitution requirement through course work.

NON-WESTERN AND MINORITY STUDIES--3 units

ARTS--3-6 units
Students should complete this requirement after transfer to The University of Arizona by taking Music 330a and 330b.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Consult a music education advisor at The University of Arizona for assistance in selecting the required course work. Students pursuing a major in music education must meet the following special requirements before being admitted to the Teacher Education Program.

  1. Completion of 56 units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree.
  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 units of college course work.
  3. Minimum grade-point average of 2.80 in all music courses other than ensembles.
  4. Completion of the Music Education Advisory Review process.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or
  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 220 or POS 221 and 222) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. (Refer to individuals, societies and institutions requirement.)
