College of Nursing, Pre-Nursing Curriculum

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the Coordinator of Undergraduate Student Affairs in the College of Nursing (626-6161) to obtain more information about the nursing major.

Please note: A transfer guide may list more than 72 units of course work. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Consult your advisor regarding course selection.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE HDE 105, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES!" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. While this course is nontransferable, it does contribute to the grade point average for admission to the University. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in HDE 105.

SPECIAL ADMISSION INFORMATION REGARDING THE COLLEGE OF NURSING

Admission to the College of Nursing is selective and competitive. Applicants for admission to the College of Nursing must first meet the general admission requirements to The University of Arizona. Students must complete the pre-nursing curriculum (the first three semesters including Nursing 251 and Nutritional Sciences 310) prior to entering the College of Nursing for the second semester of the sophomore year. Students are encouraged to contact the College of Nursing early for advising assistance to ensure timely completion of the pre-nursing course requirements.

Application for admission to the College of Nursing should be filed by December 1 for students seeking admission to the fall semester and by July 1 for students seeking admission to the spring semester. Requirements for application to the College of Nursing are as follows:

1. Submit an application for admission to The University of Arizona. As part of the admission process, official transcripts of course work completed at all post secondary institutions previously attended must be sent directly from those institutions to the Office of Admissions at The University of Arizona.
2. Submit the special application for the College of Nursing (may be obtained from and submitted to the college). Transfer students must have their previous college courses evaluated before an application can be obtained.
3. Provide the College of Nursing with unofficial transcripts of course work completed at each post-secondary institution previously attended.
4. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.750 (on a 4.00 scale) on all transferable course work completed at post secondary institutions previously attended, course work completed at The University of Arizona and for the College of Nursing freshman year courses.
5. Complete of the pre-nursing curriculum or plan for completion of the curriculum prior to the semester for which admission is desired. All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
6. Satisfactory completion of The University of Arizona Writing-Proficiency Examination.
7. Attain basic computer skills, which may be obtained in high school, college courses, computer store training or self-taught.

Since enrollment in the College of Nursing is limited, completion of the pre-nursing curriculum and achievement of the minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.750 do not ensure admission. Students who are admitted to the College of Nursing must enroll full time; in addition, they must enroll for all required courses in the designated semester.

RN students who wish to complete a BSN degree should contact the Coordinator, RN Pathways (626-6158). An associate degree in nursing from an accredited ADN program and successful completion of the NCLEX-RN satisfies 27 units of clinical nursing course work for the BSN degree at The University of Arizona College of Nursing. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona.
