Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Refer to The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog or contact the Office of Academic Services (621-3336) for additional information.

Please note: A transfer guide may list more than 72 units of course work. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Consult your advisor regarding course selection.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

ECONOMICS
Select and complete one of the economics options listed below; while both options are acceptable, the Department of Economics recommends Option 1.

GENERAL EDUCATION SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES

ENGLISH--6 units

MATHEMATICS--3 units

Economics majors must complete at least one semester of calculus. Since several of the required core economic courses at The University of Arizona have a calculus prerequisite, students are encouraged to take calculus very early in their academic career. Additional courses in mathematics are strongly recommended.

SECOND LANGUAGE--16 units
This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to
Credit by Examination in The University of Arizona 1995-97 General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

Note: If students select Latin, Portuguese or Russian, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

TRADITIONS AND CULTURES--9 units total from List 1 and List 2

LIST 1 (Non-Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete one course from the following options:

LIST 2 (Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete a two-course sequence from the following options:

BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES--8 units
This requirement is to be satisfied by completing courses which include laboratory work. Students are strongly encouraged to take either courses in the biological sciences or courses in the physical sciences when completing this requirement.

INDIVIDUALS, SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS--9 units from two areas

ARTS--3 units

LITERATURE--3 units

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE HDE 105, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES!" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. While this course is nontransferable, it does contribute to the grade point average for admission to the University. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in HDE 105.
