Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major in Elementary Education

For students attending classes at Northland Pioneer College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The University of Arizona On-line Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865). Elementary education majors must choose a subject matter concentration in consultation with an academic advisor in the College of Education.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 units of college course work.

  3. Basic skills testing (formerly the PPST) has been suspended since spring 1994; however, for future admissions, the faculty in the College of Education are looking at various forms of basic skills assessment.

  4. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student and Career Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

ENGLISH--6 units

MATHEMATICS--3 units

MAT 105, Math for General Educatio, is preferred. One of the following higher level mathematics courses may be substituted:

This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to
Examination Policies in The University of Arizona On-line Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Northland Pioneer College includes the following:

Note: If students select French, German or Navajo, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

GENERAL EDUCATION STUDY AREAS
One of the courses (identified with an * [asterisk] preceding the course number) must focus on gender, class, race or ethnicity.

TRADITIONS AND CULTURES--9 units from List 1 and List 2

LIST 1 (Non-Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete the following course:

LIST 2 (Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete a two-course sequence from the following options:

BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES--4 units (including lab) from Category 1 and 4 units (including lab) from Category 2.

INDIVIDUALS, SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS--9 units from at least two areas

ARTS--3 units

LITERATURE--3 units

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or
  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 110 and POS 221) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. POS 110 will satisfy, for the College of Education only, three units toward the category individuals, societies and institutions.
