Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Secondary Education

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Refer to The University of Arizona On-line Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Building, Room 247) for additional information (621-7865).

Please note: A transfer guide may list more than 72 units of course work. A maximum of 72 units of community college credit may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Consult your advisor regarding course selection.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 units of college course work.

  3. Basic skills testing (formerly the PPST) has been suspended since spring 1994; however, for future admissions, the faculty in the College of Education are looking at various forms of basic skills assessment.

  4. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student and Career Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

GENERAL EDUCATION SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES

ENGLISH--6 units

MATHEMATICS--3 units

One of the following higher level mathematics courses may be substituted. The mathematics course chosen will depend upon the teaching major and minor. Contact the College of Education for further information.

SECOND LANGUAGE--16 units
This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to
Examination Policies in The University of Arizona On-line Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

Note: If students select Latin or Portuguese, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

GENERAL EDUCATION STUDY AREAS
One of the courses (identified with an * [asterisk] preceding the course number) must focus on gender, class, race or ethnicity.

TRADITIONS AND CULTURES--9 units total from List 1 and List 2

LIST 1 (Non-Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete one course from the following options:

LIST 2 (Western Traditions and Cultures) - complete a two-course sequence from the following options:

BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES--8 units
This requirement is to be satisfied by completing courses which include laboratory work. Students are strongly encouraged to take either courses in the biological sciences or courses in the physical sciences when completing this requirement.

*The laboratory experience for this class may be taken at the UA (SWES 106).

INDIVIDUALS, SOCIETIES AND INSTITUTIONS--9 units from at least two areas

** Students at Pima Community College may take POS 110 and 130 or POS 220 to satisfy United States and Arizona Constitution requirements.

ARTS--3 units

LITERATURE--3 units

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or

  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 110 and 130 or POS 220) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. (Refer to the individuals, societies and institutions requirement.)

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE HDE 105, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES!" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. This course transfers to the UA as elective credit. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in HDE 105.
