For students attending classes at Northland Pioneer College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Entrance examinations in musicianship and the major performance area are required. All transfer music majors (except piano and organ performance majors) must audition for placement in class or group instruction. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA Desert Lynx On-line Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Northland Pioneer College includes the following:

  • FRE 101, 102
  • GER 101, 102
  • LAN 201, 202
  • SPA 101, 102, 201, 202

Note: If students select French, German or Navajo, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS -- Students entering any of the degree programs in music must, at the very minimum, have instrumental or vocal performance skills at the MUSI181 level. This level requires at least two years of intensive private instruction and/or four years of ensemble participation. Some music degrees require a higher entrance level. A student's performance level is determined by audition at the beginning of his/her first semester of enrollment.

In addition to the music courses listed below, students should complete individual instruction course work in their major instrument or voice. Course work in conducted ensembles is also required.

Music--24 credits

  • MUS 135 and 136, 140 and 141*, 235 and 236, 240 and 241**, 275 and 276 (for use as a music elective)***

* These courses are not required for majors in performance with a keyboard specialization.
** These courses are not required for majors in performance with a keyboard or voice specialization.
*** Courses may be used as major credit for the composition major.
