For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Refer to The UA Desert Lynx On-line Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Building, Room 247) for additional information (621-7865). A maximum of 64 credits of community college course workmay be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Consult your advisor regarding course selection. Students interested in teaching at the secondary school level will select a subject area teaching major and, in most cases, a teaching minor. The BS degree is granted in mathematics and science majors. The BA degree is granted to other approved teaching majors. In addition to an advisor in the College of Education, secondary students should also consult with a faculty advisor in the academic subject matter department(s) in which they plan to teach. For a list of faculty advisors, contact the Office of Student and Career Services. Teaching majors and minors, including course requirements, are also listed on the Internet (see "Academic Program Requirements"). A limited number of lower-division course work for the teaching major/minor may be taken at the community college.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.

  3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student and Career Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

ARIZONA GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM (AGEC-A)--35 credits (click here to see course lists). Complete the AGEC that is appropriate for the desired Secondary Education major, either AGEC-A or AGEC-S.
Freshman Composition--6 credits
Humanities and Fine Arts--6-9 credits
Biological and Physical Sciences--8 credits
Mathematics--3 credits
Social and Behavioral Sciences--6-9 credits
Other Requirement Options--0-6 credits

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level for the BA, at the second semester level for the BS. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA Desert Lynx On-line Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

Note: If students select Latin or Portuguese, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or

  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 110 and 130 or POS 220) on the United States and Arizona constitutions.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE HDE 105, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES!" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. This course transfers to the UA as elective credit. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in HDE 105.
