Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education
Voice or Instrumental
For students attending classes at Central Arizona College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Entrance examinations in musicianship and the major performance area are required. All transfer Music majors (except Piano and Organ Performance majors) must audition for placement in class or group piano instruction. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the assistant director of the School of Music (621-1454) for additional information. Students entering any of the degree programs in music must, at the very minimum, have instrumental or vocal performance skills at the MUSI181 level. This level requires at least two years of intensive private instruction and/or four years of ensemble participation. Some music degrees require a higher entrance level. A student's performance level is determined by audition at the beginning of his/her first semester of enrollment.

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Central Arizona College includes the following:

  • FRE 101, 102
  • SPA 101, 102, 201, 202

Note: If students select French, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS -- In addition to the music courses listed below, students should complete eight credits of individual instruction in their major instrument or voice and four credits of a conducted ensemble. Instrumental music education majors should also complete one credit of course work in a coached ensemble.

  • MHL 203 and 204; MHL 207 - for use as elective credit
  • MTC 101 and 102
  • MTC 201 and 202
  • MUP 103*, 110, 200

* This course is required only for majors in instrumental music education.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION -- Consult a music advisor at The University of Arizona for assistance in selecting the required course work. Students pursuing a major in music education must meet the following special requirements before being admitted to the Teacher Education Program:

  1. Completion of 56 units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree.
  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.
  3. Minimum grade-point average of 2.80 in all music courses other than ensembles.
  4. Completion of the Music Education Advisory Review process.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or
  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 101 and POS 103) on the United States and Arizona constitutions.
