Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major in Elementary Education

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student and Career Services in the College of Education (Education Building, Room 247) for additional information (621-7865). Elementary Education majors must choose a subject matter concentration from the list below. A maximum of nine units may be taken at the community college (after AGEC-A requirements). Consult your advisor regarding course selection. If you will not be completing this transfer guide, see the "Acceptance of Transfer Course Work to meet UA General Education Requirements."

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.

3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student and Career Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

• GER 110, 111, 210, 211
• ITA 110, 111, 210, 211
• JPN 110, 111, 210, 211
• LAT 110, 111
• RUS 110, 111, 210, 211
• SLG 101, 102, 201, 202
• SPA 110, 111, 201, 202 or 210, 211

Note: If students select Latin, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES -- anthropology (suggested, ANTH 215), psychology (suggested, PSYC 101), sociology, fine arts (art, music, theatre arts, dance), science, history (suggested, HIST 141, 142).

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
   or
2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 110 and 130 or POS 220) on the United States and Arizona constitutions.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE HDE 105, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES!" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. This course transfers to the UA as elective credit. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in HDE 105.
