UA Coconino Community College Transfer Guide for 2000-01

Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Special Education and Rehabilitation

For students attending classes at Coconino Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865). If you will not be completing this transfer guide, see the "Acceptance of Transfer Course Work to meet UA General Education Requirements."

Students interested in Special Education and Rehabilitation choose one of three concentration in the major:

The General Rehabilitation option prepares the student for entry-level positions in group homes, school transition programs, mental health facilities, agencies serving the physically disabled, corrections facilities, social service agencies, and other settings.

The Deaf Studies concentration prepares the student to work within the deaf community in roles such as rehabilitation technician, job coach, interpreter, and staff in residential schools and service agencies.  Advanced competency in American Sign Language is required for the program.

The Special Education focus provides the student with a broad introduction to special education.  While not leading to teacher certification at the bachelor's level, this program prepares students for entry-level special education careers (teaching assistant, house parent, etc.), as well as preparation for master's level course work in special education.

NOTE:  The University of Arizona is currently offering a pilot program in cross-categorical special education teaching.  Students interested in this pilot program should contact the Office of Student Services for further information.
