UA/Cochise College transfer guides for 2001-02

For students attending classes at Cochise College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865) for any teaching major or minor not available at the UA South campus. Students interested in teaching at the secondary school level will select a subject area teaching major and, in most cases, a teaching minor. The BS Ed. degree is granted in mathematics and science majors. The BA Ed. degree is granted in other approved teaching majors. For a list of approved teaching majors and minors see below. In addition to an advisor in the College of Education, secondary students should also consult with a faculty advisor in the academic subject matter department(s) in which they plan to teach. For a list of faculty advisors, contact the advisors at UA South Campus or the Office of Student Services in Tucson. Teaching majors and minors, including course requirements, are also listed on the Internet  (see http://catalog.arizona.edu/2001-02. Then click on "Majors/Degrees" or "Minors".) A limited number of lower-division course work for the teaching major/minor may be taken at the community college.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadline for admission to the UA South is June 1st for any Fall; the deadlines for the UA at Tucson are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.

  3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

ARIZONA GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM (AGEC)--35 credits (course lists). Complete the AGEC that is appropriate for the desired Secondary Education major, either AGEC-A or AGEC-S.
Freshman Composition--6 credits
Humanities and Fine Arts--6 credits
Biological and Physical Sciences--8 credits
Mathematics--3-5 credits
Social and Behavioral Sciences--6 credits
Information Literacy--3 credits
General Education Elective--1-3 credits

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level for the BA, or at the second semester level for the BS. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Cochise College includes the following:

  • FRE 101, 102, 201, 202
  • GER 101, 102, 201, 202
  • LAT 101, 102, 201, 202
  • SPA 101, 102, 201, 202

UA SOUTH TEACHING MAJORS

  • English, History, Political Science, Social Studies, Spanish (offered under the Bachelor of Arts in Education degree)
  • Mathematics (offered under the Bachelor of Science in Education degree)

UA SOUTH TEACHING MINORS

  • Computer Science, English, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, Spanish

Note: The teaching major in Social Studies requires a minimum of 50 semester units and does not require a minor. The teaching minors in Computer Science and Psychology are not available as teaching majors.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

  1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on the United States and Arizona constitutions;
    or
  2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 220 or POS 110 and POS 221) on the United States and Arizona constitutions.
