Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in
Special Education and Rehabilitation

For students attending classes at Central Arizona College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865). Students interested in Special Education and Rehabilitation choose one of two concentrations in the major:

The General Rehabilitation option prepares the student for entry-level positions in group homes, school transition programs, mental health facilities, agencies serving the physically disabled, corrections facilities, social service agencies, and other settings.

The Deaf Studies concentration prepares the student to work within the deaf community in roles such as rehabilitation technician, job coach, interpreter, and staff in residential schools and service agencies.  Advanced competency in American Sign Language is required for the program.

Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is selective. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).
2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of transferable college course work.
3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor's degree in special education and rehabilitation should contact the College of Education, Office of Student Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the second semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Central Arizona College includes the following:

• FRE 101, 102
• SPA 101, 102, 201, 202

Note: If students select French, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.
