Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major in Elementary Education

For students attending classes at Cochise College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the pre-education advisor at The University of Arizona Main Campus (621-7865) or South Campus (458-8278, ext. 2120) for additional information. Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is competitive. The deadline for admission to the UA South campus is June 1st for Fall admission. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.

3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the UA South campus. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Cochise College includes the following:

• ASL 101, 102, 201, 202
• FRE 101, 102, 201, 202
• GER 101, 102, 201, 202
• LAT 101, 102, 201, 202
• RUS 101, 102
• SPA 101, 102, 201, 202

Note:  If students select Russian, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES

1. The following courses, in addition to AGEC-A requirements, will satisfy units toward the 18-unit academic concentration required in Elementary Education at the UA:
   
   Science: 6-8 units general science in areas different from those chosen for the AGEC.
   
   Social Studies:  6-9 units social science, selected from: HIS 110*, 111*; POS 110, 220 (Note: POS 220 or POS 110 and 221 will also satisfy the U.S. and Arizona constitution requirement); ECN 201, 202; GEO 102, 105, 121.
   
   Multicultural Social Issues/Education: 3 units, selected from: EDU 201*.
   
   
2. The following courses will meet other required Elementary Education subject knowledge areas:
   
   Fine Arts: 3-6 units selected from art, music, theatre arts (suggested: ART 120, MUS 260).
   
   Science:  see A above
   
   Math: MAT 125* and 126*, in addition to requirements for the AGEC-A, will substitute for MATH302A and MATH302B at the UA.

Degree requirements include completion of the United States Constitution and Arizona Constitution.  POS 220 or POS 110 and POS 221 meet this requirement.
