Bachelor of Music with a major in Music Education
Voice or Instrumental

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. Entrance examinations in musicianship and the major performance area are required. All transfer Music majors (except Piano and Organ Performance majors) must audition for placement in class or group piano instruction. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the assistant director of the School of Music (621-5929) for additional information. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Consult your advisor regarding course selection. If you will not be completing this transfer guide, see the "Acceptance of Transfer Course Work to meet UA General Education Requirements."

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the second semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS -- Students entering any of the degree programs in music must, at the very minimum, have instrumental or vocal performance skills at the MUSI181 level. This level requires at least two years of intensive private instruction and/or four years of ensemble participation. Some music degrees require a higher entrance level. A student's performance level is determined by audition at the beginning of his/her first semester of enrollment.

• MUS 125 and 127, 126 and 128, 141 and 142, 143 and 144, 201 and 202, 207 - for use as a Music elective, 225 and 227, 226 and 228

In addition to the music courses listed above, students should complete eight credits of individual instruction in their major instrument or voice and four credits in a conducted ensemble. Instrumental music education majors should also complete one credit of course work in a coached ensemble.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION -- Consult a music education advisor at The University of Arizona for assistance in selecting the required course work. Students pursuing a major in music education must meet the following special requirements before being admitted to the Teacher Education Program:

1. Completion of 56 units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree.
2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of college course work.
3. Minimum grade-point average of 2.80 in all music courses other than ensembles.
4. Completion of the Music Education Advisory Review process.
5. Basic skills testing (formerly the PPST) has been suspended since spring 1994; however, for future admissions, the faculty in the College of Education are looking at various forms of basic skills assessment.

As part of the teacher certification process, the State of Arizona requires all teachers to:

1. Satisfactorily complete the Arizona examination on United States and Arizona constitutions;
   or
2. Satisfactorily complete course work (POS 110 and 130 both, or POS 220) on the United States and Arizona constitutions. (Refer to the individuals, societies and institutions requirement.)

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE STU 210, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. This course transfers to the UA as elective credit. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in STU 210.
