Bachelor of Arts in Education, secondary level, grades 7-12 For students attending classes at Arizona Western College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelors degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Education Bldg., Rm. 247) for additional information (621-7865). If you will not be completing this transfer guide, see the "Acceptance of Transfer Course Work to meet UA General Education Requirements." Students interested in teaching at the secondary school level will select a subject area teaching major and, in most cases, a teaching minor. BAE Teaching majors are found in the College of Education. They are: English, French, Geography, German, History, Latin (Classics), Political Science, Russian, Social Studies, Spanish. BSE Teaching majors are found in the College of Science. In addition to an advisor in the College of Education, secondary students should also consult with a faculty advisor in the academic subject matter department(s) in which they plan to teach. For a list of faculty advisors, contact the Office of Student Services. Course requirements for all teaching majors and minors are also listed on the Internet (see http://catalog.arizona.edu/2003-04. Choose your catalog year then click on "Majors & Degrees" or "Minors".) A limited number of lower-division course work for the teaching major/minor may be taken at the community college. Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is selective. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level for the BA, or at the second semester level for the BS. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated.
