Bachelor of Arts in Education with a major in Elementary Education

For students attending classes at Pima Community College and preparing to transfer to The University of Arizona, the following course work is recommended. A maximum of 64 credits of community college course work may be applied to a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Arizona. Refer to The UA General Catalog or contact the Office of Student Services in the College of Education (Education Building, Room 247) for additional information (621-7865). Formal admission to the College of Education is required of all undergraduate students who wish to pursue a major or earn a teaching certificate in the College of Education. Admission to the College of Education is selective. The deadlines for admission are the second Friday in September for any Spring term and the second Friday in February for any Fall term. Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Fifty-six units of credit applicable to a baccalaureate degree completed by beginning of professional program (junior year).

  2. Cumulative grade-point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) or higher on the most current 56 credits of transferable college course work.

  3. Students who are judged eligible for admission are evaluated by additional criteria. Those individuals who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in teacher education should contact the College of Education, Office of Student Services. Students are strongly encouraged to contact education advisors early in their academic programs for more details concerning admission criteria.

ARIZONA GENERAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM (AGEC-A)--35 credits (course lists)
NOTE: Second Language and Major Requirement courses may fulfill AGEC requirements, see your Pima Community College advisor.
Freshman Composition--6 credits
Humanities and Fine Arts--6-9 credits
Biological and Physical Sciences--8 credits
Mathematics--3 credits. MAT 142 or above required.
Social and Behavioral Sciences--6-9 credits
Other Requirement Options--0-6 credits

SECOND LANGUAGE -- This requirement may be met by demonstrating proficiency in a single second language at the fourth semester level. Refer to Examination Policies in The UA General Catalog for additional information on ways in which proficiency may be demonstrated. Course work available at Pima Community College includes the following:

  • FRE 101, 102, 201, 202
  • GER 101, 102, 201, 202
  • GRK 101, 102, 201, 202
  • ITA 101, 102, 201, 202
  • JPN 101, 102, 201, 202
  • LAT 101, 102, 201, 202
  • POR 101, 102
  • RUS 101, 102, 201, 202
  • SLG 101, 102, 201, 202
  • SPA 101, 102, 201, 202 or 203

Note: If students select Portuguese, the intermediate level of study may be completed upon transfer to The University of Arizona.

RECOMMENDED ELECTIVES

  1. The following courses, in addition to AGEC-A requirements, will satisfy units toward the 18-unit academic concentration required in Elementary Education at the UA:

    Science:  6-8 units general science in areas different from those chosen for the AGEC.

    Social Studies:  6-9 units social science, selected from: HIS 141*, 142*; either POS 220 or both 110 and 130 (Note: taking either POS 220 or both POS 110 and  130 will also satisfy the U.S. and Arizona constitution requirement); ANT 215; ECN 200, 201, 202; GEO 103, 104.

    Multicultural Social Issues/Education:  EDU 200*

  2. The following courses will meet other required Elementary Education subject knowledge areas:

    Fine Arts:  3-6 units selected from art, music, theatre arts, dance (suggested ART 105, THE 149).

    Science: see A above.

    Math:  MAT 146* and 147*

Degree requirements include completion of the United States Constitution and the Arizona Constitution.  POS 220 or POS 110 and POS 130 meet these requirements.

PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO COMPLETE STU 210, "TRANSFER STRATEGIES" This course offers UA campus visits; meetings with UA staff members who represent the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, The Center for Transfer Students and other University resources; and consultation for evaluating transfer timing. This course transfers to the UA as elective credit. See a P.C.C. counselor/advisor about enrolling in STU 210.
